FAO INTERVENSION TO SUPPORT THE DZUD-AFFECTED HERDER FAMILIES IN MONGOLIA (2010)

The FAO emergency program to support the Dzud-affected, vulnerable herder families comprised three projects: - TCP/MON/3301, OSRO/MON/001/AUS and OSRO/MON/002/CHA. These programs were tailored to respond to the emergency needs of the vulnerable herder families who owned 100-300 units of livestock and had lost more than 50% of those livestock.

The key objective of the emergency program was to protect the food and livelihood security of 2,614 most vulnerable herder families in the 7 Dzud-affected aimags through the emergency supply of livestock inputs (supplementary feed, milk powder and veterinary medicine) and to help prevent further deaths of livestock in Arkhangai, Uvurkhangai, Dundgobi, Bayankhongor, Gobi-Altai, Zavkhan and Umnugobi aimags. In consultation with the FAO Project Implementing Unit, the RISC assisted the project in the correct selection of project beneficiaries, monitored transportation, delivery and effective use of the project livestock inputs and conducted impact assessment of the project. The progress and final reports on the monitoring and evaluation were and submitted by the RISC
